As we go around one of the numerous switchbacks there is signs of snow.
Yep, we did it. Climbed right into them-there snow-capped mountains.
The road continues upward and there is more and more snow. Soon the roads are covered in ice and it's time to turn around.
Check out the view from about half way up.
Ah, hot soup and bread with cay on the way.
These guys deliver full service. When was the last time your barber gave you a massage? Someone better wake Tom up.
top by our barber if you are in the area.
The climbing started immediately once we passed Kalkan.
As the snow melts water rushes powerfully down from the mountains.
Remember those snow-covered mountains we showed you on Saturday? Well here is a closer look.
Day 6
We got a late start today because we stayed up late eating and having a few drinks to wind down the day. Nonetheless, the sun was out and it was going to be a climbing day. The road to Kalkan gave us a good warm up and does include some climbing, but not the type of climbing we were after.
Rustem and I decided not to stop for our usual cup (or two) of cay and head straight for the mountain. The climbing started immediately with the first climb taking us over an hour to top. The view was spectacular.
Since we know that weather in New England is rough and snow is in the forecast, we ventured onward in search of some snow ourselves. The snow covered peaks that we had seen from afar were now in clear view and we were determined to get a closer look.
Heck, we just climbed right up into the snow. After about 2+ hours of climbing the snow started to cover more and more of the road and the temperature was started to drop severely with the high altitude. Unfortunately, we got to a point when the sun was hidden and the roads were covered in ice. We tried to push forward and dismounted to walk across the ice sections approx. 150 feet in length.
We had reached another long sheet of ice where no end was in sight and it was cold. There was no way to tell how much more ice we were going to encounter. We surely didn't want to descent on it. So with the road continuing to climb and the sun hidden, we painfully turned around back to Kalkan.
We descended the entire mountain, which took us 3 hours to climb, in 20 minutes. It was fast and a bit dangerous with the multiple switchbacks.
Back in Kalkan we stopped at a restaurant for a bowl of soup and some cay. Rustem and I were starved. The usual newspaper was placed under our jerseys and we rode the remaining hour back to Kas where we stopped for a shave and a massage. These barbers are incredible. Our necks and backs were trashed from the climbing and descending and these guys fixed us up.
Tomorrow will definitely be an easy day.
